Escape the bustle of urban life on the longest off-road walking and cycling experience in Ireland - all 42km of the new Great Western Greenway.
The Great Western Greenway traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast between Westport and Achill Island and visits the picturesque villages of Newport and Mulranny. It passes by some of the West of Ireland’s most dramatic mountains and offers magnificent views of Clew Bay and its many islands. The trail map of the Great Western Greenway can be found here
The Newport to Achill section of the trail is renowned for its stunning views with landscape steeped in history with Mulranny begin the heart of this section.
Travelling this greenway, you’ll be surrounded by idyllic countryside. This is a chance to drink in the view of the spectacular Nephin Mountains and across Clew Bay to Croagh Patrick. This route offers gentle gradients. The route lends itself to a unique look at the folklore and mystery of thousands of years.
Mulranny is steeped in west Mayo's railway heritage as one of the stations on the former Westport to Achill Midland Great Western Railway Line and railway hotel at Mulranny (now the Mulranny Park Hotel). This once magnificent built heritage had declined into dereliction over the last century, but the remarkable decade of the 2000's, saw the hotel restored to its former glory, while the old railway line reemerge as the Great Western Greenway. This coupled with the community led initative to re develop the Mulranny Causeway and the old Victorian walking trails into high amenity walking loop.
All these achievements led to the area winning the European Destination of Excellence Award for the regeneration of physical sites. A very proud achievement!
